Emphasis- Tthe human figure in this piece is in a darker hue than the “spirtits” and also in a light colored carrier which draws your eyes straight towards her.

Repetition- There are lots of the same colors, patterns, and techniques used throughout this art work that blend together to make it feel coherent.

A Few of my Favorite Things

  • 1. Camera- I really enjoy taking pictures of things and people I love. I also really enjoy getting my picture taken and wanted to be a model when I was younger. I also recently bought this camera over the summer.
  • 2. Wallet- This wallet is special to me because I got it while I was in Barcelona. The wallet combines my love for travelling and going to new places with shopping and spending money.
  • 3. Stuffed Animal- My little sister, who is four, and I have matching stuffed animals. The 2 peas in a pod theme demonstrates our likeness and love. It was hard for us when I moved from WV to FL, so this is our reminder of each other.
  • 4. Picture- This is a picture of my mom and me. The picture is important to me for two reasons. The first is because it was taken at my last dance competition after 15 years, and over the course of all of those competitions, my mom and I became really close. The second reason it is important is that my mom is my role model and my biggest supporter, and I owe everything to her.
  • 5.  Card- This card was made by one of the young dancers whom I teach every week. It is important to me because dance has always been my passion, and I love passing it on to them. The card is also a reminder to me of my purpose and importance in the world in general.

Reflection

These sculptures visually communicate energy and movement with a childlike feel.  While experimenting with the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on the process. Subconsciously by pieces are more "animated" and have a lot for the eye to follow. For each of my pieces I did not go in with a plan, I took different materials and worked on different ways I could stick them together and overlap them. I decided to include wood in all of my pieces as a cohesive element that brought the collection together but I also found it to be a sturdy base for exploring materials. I felt the work was lacking in color so I went back and used ink in them. The ink made the pieces more put together, even though not all of the colors were vibrant.
I want to keep exploring with ink in gel like mediums and how they move around and what they look like after they dry. I also want to learn more about different ways to cut wood and layer it. In my sculptures I used glue, so I would like to look into other materials. This piece allowed me to explore my own aesthetics. As I added pieces to my sculpture one at a time, I got to explore what I felt "looked good" or not, because there was no right or wrong restrictions, with regards, to assignment guidelines. The making of this work exposed new ideas such as what can I do with glue. I used Mod Podge and hot glue in many different ways and with different materials so it was cool to see how different things reacted with each other.
